CARPINTERIA INDEPENDENCE DAY PARADE, JUNE 28

A message from Elise Unruh, CHS band director:

We do appear to have enough interest to make a showing at the parade this year, especially if we get some additional alumni besides the Class of 2008. I haven’t heard back from Mr. Nevens yet, so if YOU know some alumni (parents, friends and/or siblings), please bring them along! It will be really good PR for us to show up, so if you said you’d do the parade, PLEASE try to follow through. Here’s the plan:

· Rehearsal at the high school at 2:30 PM on Saturday June 28, the same day as the parade. We will learn a very easy patriotic march on the spot and figure out a parade formation and routine.

· After an hour or so of practice, head down to Linden for the start of the parade. Share rides, get parents to help drive, walk --- whatever works for you.

· I’ll bring my wagon to transport instruments. If you or your parents drive a big vehicle and can also help, great!

· Wear band shirts, alumni shirts, or red, white and blue shirts. Jeans or shorts on the bottom are fine.

· Parade line-up is at 4 PM; parade starts at 5 PM.

· If you originally said you were available for this parade and your plans have changed so that you WON’T be there, please contact me ASAP (see contact info at bottom of page).

CONTACTING ME
  • The BEST way to contact me over the summer is by email . I read those every morning. Please use that address instead of the cusd.net one.
  • You can also call CHS and leave a voice mail message: 684-4107 x249. If you happen to have my cell phone number, don’t use it because I don’t keep it turned on and I won’t get your message for weeks!

If I don’t see you at any of our summer activities, have a great summer.

Ms. Unruh

1970s Photos!

Jim Parker has scanned and posted an album of Band photos from various years and events in the 1970s. Very cool stuff.

The War on the Shore

A good time was had by all at yesterday's War on the Shore Alumni football game vs. Bishop. Believe it or not, 6200 people were in attendance as Bishop squeaked out a 10-9 victory over our alma mater. More to the point, that many people watched and listened as the good ol' Warrior Band and Alumni Band took the field at halftime.

I think that's the largest crowd the Warrior (Alumni) Band has played for - at least with your humble webmaster among the trombones - in over 30 years. I'm thinking about USC Band Day, which would have been mid-1970s. That was a huge crowd, and several large bands. I'm not sure of the year, but I remember Lalo Schifrin conducted, and the Trojan band did their Fleetwood Mac "Tusk" thing, which was cool.

I don't know how we sounded yesterday from where Langdon was standing, but I thought we sounded alright. But I wonder if anyone else among the ancient venerable band geeks found him or herself on the field, suddenly trying to read the music at lyre- distance, and realizing he or she was wearing the wrong glasses for anything that close. Dang.

Jim Parker and I took some photos. If you have any you'd like to share, please e-mail them to me and I'll add them.

If you have comments on the game or the performance, add them to the comments on this post. Or e-mail me, and I'll post them for you.

Here's a little video.

Rebuilding Bandstravaganza List

In order to keep in touch with band and drill team alumni, I am rebuilding our Yahoo Group mailing list and Web site. We stopped using it for a while, but trying to keep up a mailing list manually proved that an automated group can be very useful.

To subscribe to the mailing list, click here and send an e-mail.

In your e-mail, please give your name, year of graduation from CHS, and what part you played in the band, drill team, flags, etc.

If you need some help, wish to change your subscription or anything, click here and send an e-mail.

If you wish to unsubscribe, click here and send an e-mail.

If you would like to review the Group archive, you must be subscribed and logged in with a Yahoo ID. Here is a link to the archive.

Please note that our Yahoo Group is for annoucements only. Although it will act as a message board for all to post, we don't have that function turned on. But we already have a message board like that at carphighalumni.com. Just scroll down to "Warrior Band Alumni."

If you have comments about the mailing list, you can leave them on this post.

One More Practice, Then The Show

The practice on May 15 was a success and we're still on for the show on May 24.

There will be one more practice, 5/23/08, 7:00PM at the CHS Band Room.

Practice May 15

The next practice for the May 24 football game is set for Thursday May 15, at 7:00pm in the band room at CHS.

The practice on May 8 featured a formidable and stalwart showing of trumpets and trombones.

The planning committee is still seeking a response from all band and drill team alumni. Please e-mail us and say whether you plan to attend. Even if you're not sure, we really want to hear from you today.

Speaking of today, Happy Mothers Day to all the Moms out there.

New Google Group Coming

I'm setting up a new message board/e-mail list for us on Google groups.

For the past year or so, I've been sending announcements by regular e-mail, with all your addresses in BCC. (You're not supposed to put the addresses under To, because then everybody sees all the e-mail addresses - there's no privacy.) But now when I do that, AOL is refusing to deliver e-mail to any of its members.

So it was either rebuild a Yahoo Group - with its slow delivery and advertising in the messages - or try a new system.

We will have a homepage also, where you can go to post or read messages. See below.

When you receive the first e-mail from the Google Group, I suggest putting its e-mail address in your address book, and the Web page in your bookmarks.

This should be pretty easy to use. More instructions will follow. If you ever have trouble, you can e-mail me directly.

Update: Google Group Canceled. I put in 39 e-mail addresses to start it, Google said they'd have to review it and get back to me. They never did. What I crock. They have groups with thousands of members. Maybe it just went Fubar. Anyhoo, I'll have to rebuild our old Yahoo Group.

ALUMNI FOOTBALL GAME

Fellow Warrior Band ‘ites’:

The Booster’s Clubs from CHS and Bishop Diego HS have an exciting event planned. There will be an alumni football game between the two rivals on Saturday May 24, 2008. The event will be held at La Playa Stadium (SB City College) at 4:00 in the afternoon, followed by a dinner dance.

We are planning to put together a band, as well. We are also inviting members of the current high school bands (yes, Bishop now has a band). The organizers would like a half time show, but we have not made that commitment as yet. If we have enough people who are interested, we will address that possibility. For now, we have committed to a pep band in the stands.

There is lots of music already on the alumni website for tho0se of you who would like to actually practice. We will be starting Thursday night practices at 7:00 in the CHS band room on May 1. We welcome you to join us for any or all of these rehearsals.

If we do decide to do a half time, we will probably put it together that day (just like we do for the Alumni halftime in September.) We are tentatively thinking about starting around 12:00. Maybe we can work for an hour or so, then have some kind of a lunch and then get back to work.

Please let us know right away if you are interested. More details to follow.
